With Pudong Airport and Hongqiao Airport, Shanghai, the most important economic center in China, is one of the main arrival/departure cities in China. Travelers flying to Shanghai may need to wait half a day to a day before boarding an onward flight.

Visa-Free Transit Policy:

Shanghai Municipality is visa-free for transit passengers! Shanghai and neighboring Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces offer a 144-hour, or six-day visa-free transit, for foreigners from 51 countries on arrival in Shanghai, Nanjing or Hangzhou from January 30, 2016.

According to the State Public Security Ministry, foreigners availing of the 144-hour visa scheme at Shanghai’s two airports, Hangzhou (Xiaoshan International Airport) and Nanjing (Lukou International Airport) and Ship Quay or Railway Station, can stay in the city and the two provinces for six days without a visa. They can also leave the country from any of these airports Ship Quay or Railway Station.

The 51 countries entitled to service are Albania, Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Macedonia, Malta, Mexico, Montenegro, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States of America.

The 144 hours means: After confirming his / her qualification for 144-hour visa-exemption transit, the immigration inspection station will issue the foreign passenger a temporary entry permit. It is free of charge. And by these stamps, tourist can stay in hotel or take train, flight and so on in Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang Province.

If the passenger who is with the passport issued by one of the above 51 countries wants to get into Shanghai with this visa-free policy, but she/he wants to return to her/his country after the stay in Shanghai/Jiangsu/Zhejiang Province, the passenger can take the ticket which leaves Shanghai for a 3rd country or region (such as Hongkong), and return to her/his country afterwards. Such an arrangement will enable you to meet the requirements for 144-hour visa-exemption transit.

How to plan a layover tour in Shanghai:

As a city with thousands of years history, Shanghai, where East meeting West and the past joining the future, is now the most cosmopolitan city in China. Tourists in Shanghai can easily find awesome modern skyscrapers anywhere, and meanwhile, large neighborhoods of foreign architectures built in the concession times would also catch your eye. The graceful, charming and elegant western buildings where Europeans once resided, the pleasant tree-lined streets, long and complicated alleyways still retain an air of the "Paris of the East". The classic ancient Chinese attractions in the old Shanghai Town in the current downtown Shanghai are also deserving of a visit for all tourists.

Luggage Deposit:

There are 6 luggage deposit offices in the Pudong International Airport:

In Terminal Building 1: between Gate 4 and Gate 5 and between Gate 10 and Gate 11 in the Departure Hall, and between Gate 6 and Gate 7 in the Arrival Hall. The telephone number is 021-6834 6324.

In Terminal Building 2: near Service Counter A and near Service Counter M in the Departure Hall; and near the International Arrivals exit. The telephone number is 021-6834 0076.
