Qingdao Tours

The beautiful seaside city of Qingdao is located on Jiaozhou Bay on the Yellow Sea. It is one of the closest Chinese cities to Korea and Japan, making Qingdao an important port for international trade. In addition to its industry and commerce, Qingdao is also known for its scenic coastal view, colonial style architectures, historical residences and other tourist attractions. In the first half of the 1900s, Qingdao was a colony of Germany and Japan, thus the great abundance of buildings with European influences. It is sometimes called the Switzerland of the Orient, owing to it's red-roof buildings, green trees, blue sea and sky. The city is surrounded by sea on three sides, so part of the attraction is to walk along the coastline, enjoy the beach and listen to the waves breaking on the shore. Furthermore, there are plenty of sightseeing opportunities, such as the Eight Passes Villas, Zhanqiao Pier, May 4th Square and Mt. Laoshan. Another attraction of the city is its local cuisine of seafood since this is the very place where you could enjoy a great variety of fresh seafood coming directly from the sea.

Zhanqiao Pier

Zhanqiao Pier is the symbol of Qingdao, originally completed in 1891 as a naval pier and expanded by the Germans in 1897. It is accompanied by a two-story Chinese pavilion and the impressive Zhan Bridge. The pavilion stands in contrast to the European architecture in the background. The bay, islands and lighthouse make it an enchanting location and a hub of activity.

Small Qingdao Island

East of the pier is the violin-shaped island of Small Qingdao Island (Xiao Qing Dao). With its octagonal whitemarble lighthouse built by the Germans at the beginning of the last century, the island has become known locally as the " floating light of isle". The island was originally a part of the main land. Years of erosion has chipped away at the narrow ridge that connected the two eventually submerging the land pass completely. After dark, the lighthouse beacon can be seen from up to12 miles out to sea making it a must-see destination, day or night.

Qingdao Fort

Qingdaoshan fort was first built from 1899 to 1905 by the German army. In 1897, German army occupied Jiao Zhou Bay and landed on Qingdao. The colonial government was set up in Qingdao soon after the Sino-German Jiaozhou Treaty was signed. They spent a total of 1.85 million marks to build a series of military forts, Qingdaoshan fort among them.

It is a permanent fort which is made up of three parts: South fort, North Fort and underground headquarters. South fort lies on the high rock in the South of Qingdaoshan with four 280 mm cannons and two 210 mm cannons, while North fort is on the high rock in the North of Qingdaoshan. It has two 150 mm cannons. The fort occupies a commanding position with Taipingshan fort in the East and Chushuishan fort in the Northwest. Some other forts built at the same time are Zhanshan No.1 fort, Zhongjiawa South No.2 fort, Zhongjiawa East No.3 fort, Taipingzhen Southeast No.4, and several other forts. In 1914, the Japanese defeated the German forces and took over the colonial administration. When the Germans withdrew, they blew up Qingdao fort, only a small part was left undamaged. At present, part of the fort and Huiquan fort are well preserved. In 1984 Qingdao People's Governmanet opened the fort to the public and recognized it as an important cultural relic. In 1994, the fort became a Education Base of Patriotism.

The original streets are named after the eight famous passes in China, that is why the residents referred to the area as 鈥淓ight Passes.鈥. After liberation, two more major avenues were built in the area, keeping the original avenues unchanged along with their names.
