Day 1   Shanghai/Liuyuan by train (around 36 hours) 

Depart from Shanghai Railway Station at 18:25pm. Overnight in the train.

 

Day 2   On the way to Liuyuan. Overnight in the train

 

Day 3   Liuyuan/Dunhuang by bus (130KM, 2.5 Hours)

06:37am arrival in Liuyuan. The real attraction of this region is the spectacular Mogao Grottos, the home to some of the most amazing ancient Buddhist cave art in existence and the birthplace of Chinese Buddhism. Then we'll go to Mingshan Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring, where you can take in a spectacular view of the green oasis surrounded by an endless desert landscape.

 

Mogao Grottos: A most celebrated rock grotto in China. Carved in the 3rd century, it is also the largest, best preserved and richest treasure house of Buddhist art in the world.

 

Mingshan Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring: The spring at the north of the mountain; an impressive oasis landscape with a crystal clear spring in crescent shape and an interesting mountain echoing the roaring sound of wind.

 

Day 4   Dunhuang/Jiayuguan by road (380KM, 5-6 hours)/Lanzhou by train(770KM, 10 hours)  (B)

A whole day tour around Jiayuguan, visiting the Tombs of Jin and Wei Dynasties, as well as remote remnants of the Great Wall, including the ancient frontier Jiayuguan Pass and Overhanging Great Wall. Then we'll drive to Jiayuguan railway station to catch the overnight train to Lanzhou.  Overnight in the train.

 

Jiayuguan Pass: A significant gateway of the ancient Silk Road; wildly recognized as "the first and greatest pass under heaven", linking the Great Wall to form a strongly fortified defensive system

 

Overhanging Great Wall: An extended part of the Jiayuguan Pass, and was once an important component in the medieval military defense system; winding through the Gobi dessert to a steep mountain, the wall seems to hang over the cliff, hence its name.

 

Day 5   Lanzhou/Xining by train/bus (260KM, 3.5 hours)  (B)

Morning arrival in Lanzhou city. One day tour to in Lanzhou, White Pagoda Hill Park, Mill Wheel Museum, The Statue of Mother Yangtze, Zhongshan Steel Bridge. Afternoon, take bus to Xining.

Overnight in Xining.

 

Day 6   Xining/Qinghai Lake by road (160KM, 2.5 hours)  (B)

One day tour to Qinghai Lake and Mt.Riyueshan (Mt. Sun and Moon). Overnight in Xining.


Qinhghai Lake: Located 150km west of Xining, Qinghai Lake is a saline lake and the largest inland saltwater lake in China. It has abundant fish and other aquatic creatures, which in turn draws large flocks of birds to perch in the islands of the lake


Day 7   Xining   (B)

Today’s Activities: Ta’er monastery, Dongguan Grand Mosque. Overnight in Xining.

 

The Ta'er Monastery (Kumbum Monastery) is situated in Huangzhong County 25 kilometerss southwest of Xining. It is one of the two most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries outside Tibet.

 

The Dongguan Grand Mosque: is the largest mosque in Qinghai Province and one of the four greatesr mosques in China. It was established during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and has a history of about six hundred years. It is the most well preserved ancient building, as well as the center and the highest-level institution of Islamic learning in Northwest China. Dongguan Mosque is built on a grand scale. Its style combines both Chinese traditional architectural art and Islamic architectural features.

 

Day 8   Shanghai/Liuyuan by train   (B)

Transfer to airport, flight back to Shanghai (flight schedule will be guaranteed at the time of making reservation).
